Help ban the last poison that can kill wolves in Canada

Health Canada decided to keep Compound 1080 registered for use on wolves and coyotes in 2024. We filed a Notice of Objection in response to this irresponsible decision. Two years later, we are still waiting for the federal government to respond to our objection.

While this remains a significant victory, our fight is not over until Compound 1080 can no longer be used on coyotes, since this poison can kill these animals as well as many others, including wolves. Compound 1080 is also inhumane and indiscriminate as a poison, with symptoms being extremely painful and prolonged before death.

Due to a slower onset of symptoms, animals that consume Compound 1080 are able to travel further from bait sites, making them extremely hard to find. Their poisoned carcasses then become poison baits themselves.

Dear Ministers and PMRA,

I strongly oppose PMRA's 2024 decision to continue registration for the reckless and cruel poison Compound 1080.

Two years have passed since several Notices of Objection were filed in response to this decision, and in that time, Alberta (the registrant) voluntarily removed wolves from their target list. However, coyotes are still targeted, and toxicological studies show that this poison is indiscriminate; its use still threatens wolves, as well as species at risk and other carnivores.

Compound 1080's long latency period means that poisoned animals are rarely found, and the toxicant travels through the ecosystem, capable of killing wildlife scavenging poisoned carcasses.

There are more effective alternatives to poisoning wolves and other wildlife. PMRA should complete integrative pest management research to substantiate non-lethal control methods to help farmers coexist with carnivores, which serve many important ecological services, including rodent control for crop growers.

Compound 1080 is cruel, causing prolonged suffering and distress before finally killing the animal that has consumed the poison directly, or scavenged animals that consumed the poison. For this fact alone, these poisons should be banned in Canada.
