Dear Premier Eby and Minister Neill,

I ask that British Columbia, treasured around the world for its renowned wild things and wild places, immediately stop killing wolves as a provincial action to recover at-risk caribou. We are aware that the province is seeking to renew the aerial wolf killing permits without public consultation.

I am opposed to killing carnivores under the guise of conservation. Instead, I urge the province to commit to caribou recovery actions that are habitat-centred. The B.C. government's Caribou Recovery Team is attempting to reduce wolves down to a density which is equivalent to functional extirpation. A handful of unrelated wolves on the landscape cannot perform in the same way as intact wolf families with defined territories.   At this low density, especially when spread over a large distribution, it is unlikely that wolves can fulfill their ecological roles which help keep forests and wildlife communities healthy.

Therefore, ethics aside, killing wolves is not well suited to deal with other serious conservation concerns that are affecting human and non-human animals in our current times, including climate change, zoonotic diseases, parasites, and loss of biodiversity.

Whether or not killing wolves contributes to the short-term stabilization of caribou numbers, killing wolves is not an acceptable option. Wolf kill programs hurt wolves and ecosystems in a sorry attempt to deflect from the ultimate cause of caribou declines: habitat loss. As such, this program is harming caribou, rather than helping them.

Please be a true leader and do the right thing by ending British Columbia’s disgraceful war on wolves and making a clear plan that protects caribou habitat once and for all.
